In 2025, New Zealand’s Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) process now requires English proficiency for applicants in mid-skill (ANZSCO level 4–5) roles. Candidates must demonstrate their ability to speak and understand English—through citizenship, education in English-speaking countries, or tests like IELTS ≥ 4.0, TOEFL iBT ≥ 31, PTE ≥ 29, or OET ≥ D—before their employer can submit the job check via SIRI.
Who Does This Affect?
- Applicants for AEWV roles at ANZSCO level 4 or 5.
- No English test required for jobs at ANZSCO level 1 to 3 (higher-skilled roles).
- No English test required for your partner or children’s dependent visas, even if you are applying under level 4 or 5.
Meeting the English Language Requirements for AEWV Visa:
You’ve got two (02) options:
1# Prove English through citizenship, work, or study:
If you are a citizen of one of these countries AND have worked or studied there for 5+ years:
- Canada
- Ireland
- United Kingdom
- United States and Also applies to Australia & New Zealand residents.
Alternatively, if you hold a Bachelor’s or Postgrad Degree from the above countries and:
- Studied at least 2 years (for Bachelor’s Level 7 equivalent)
- Or at least 1 year (for Postgraduate Level 8+ equivalent).
Evidence required: A copy of your academic transcript, qualification certificate, and passport. Additionally, an International Qualification Assessment (IQA) may be required for recognition in New Zealand.

Do not satisfy the aforementioned criteria? There is no need for anxiety; simply complete one of the authorized assessments listed below and achieve the minimum score:
